इस अध्याय के अंत तक आवश्यक पाठ्य-सामग्री और गतिविधियों को पूर्ण करने के उपरांत आप इस योग्य होंगे/होंगी : राष्ट्रवाद के राजनीतिक विचार (अर्थात जो यह दावा करता है) और राष्ट्रवाद की वास्तविकता या राष्ट्र के अन्य पक्षों के बीच अंतर की व्याख्या कर पाना राष्ट्र की दो मुख्य व्याख्याओं - नागरिक और नृजातीय पर चर्चा कर पाना राष्ट्रवाद के उदय के आधुनिकतावादी स्पष्टीकरण की मुख्य विशेषताओं की पहचान कर पाना राष्ट्रवाद के उदय के आदिमवादी स्पष्टीकरण की मुख्य विशेषताओं की पहचान कर पाना। This chapter seeks to review the doctrine of nationalism as to whether it is a natural phenomenon or a social and a historical construct; the two principal definitions, one centered around the idea of citizenship and the other on ethnic identity arguing that the idea of ‘nation’ is fundamentally a contested concept having no universal definition; the two different explanations for the rise of nationalism - one modernist which argues that the idea of a nation is an ‘invented’ and the other primordialist which argues that nations have always existed. It does so by drawing out the many differences that exist between these explanations each having many different perspectives to it and finally shows that both the origins and the future of nation are contested terrains.
